Have your say on whether your Students’ Union should stay or leave NUS UK membership.

From 9am on Monday 23rd – 2pm on Friday 27th February, we are holding a referendum to ensure all students can express their views on this topic

The Referendum will pose the question:

“The Guild is currently a member of the National Union of Students UK (NUS UK). Do you think the Guild should stay or leave NUS UK membership?”

  • The Guild should stay in NUS UK
  • The Guild should leave NUS UK

Students will be able to select one answer in the vote. The referendum gives all students the opportunity to express their views on this topic and shape the action that the Guild should take .

Campaign Team Statements:

All campaign teams were given the opportunity to provide a campaign team statement so you can find out more about their side of the debate.

The Guild does not have a registered campaign team for the Stay in NUS UK position. Due to this, NUS UK have provided the below statement:

Vote STAY case

What is NUS?

NUS is the national voice of students, and our sole mission is to win for students. NUS UK brings together over 400 member students’ unions across the UK to campaign as a united national student movement.

Students created SUs to build collective power on our campuses, realising that we are stronger when we work together. SUs then created NUS to harness this power nationally and direct it to the government and decision makers.

By being members of NUS UK, Liverpool students contribute to the national student voice through feeding in your experiences and your priorities.

What does NUS campaign on?

NUS UK campaigns on the big issues impacting your time at university; from student poverty to housing, and from international students’ rights to transport.

Being a member of NUS is about working together. Together, over the past two years we’ve banned your landlord from charging more than one month’s rent up front – and that’s because over 50 campuses came together to campaign for it, including Liverpool. The more of us there are, the more impact we have.

We ensure that students are represented to government and the education sector. We run the All Party Parliamentary Group for Students, ensuring student voices are heard by MPs and decision makers.

What has NUS won for students recently?

Over the last year and a half, we have won:

  • An extra £2.5million for Liverpool students, thanks to a raise in student maintenance loans that NUS led campaigns for
  • The reintroduction of maintenance grants for the poorest students
  • Making it illegal for your landlord to charge you rent in advance
  • Winning the reintroduction of the Erasmus+ Scheme
  • Saved the Graduate Route Visa for international students
  • Votes at 16 increasing electoral power for students and young people

The below statement was submitted by the Leave NUS UK Campaign Team:

Currently, Liverpool Guild spends £30,700 annually on the NUS. For that price, we deserve an organisation that stands up for students and represents our concerns without hesitation. Instead, we believe NUS UK has become financially motivated and fragmented.

NUS UK has not been serving the interests of Liverpool Guild’s membership, be it ethically, politically, or democratically. NUS’s recent track record has clearly demonstrated that it lacks the capacity to resolve these long-standing problems. Further, NUS’s failure to adequately address these problems raises concerns over whether key stakeholders in NUS UK actually want to deliver acceptable solutions.

Three reasons to vote Leave:

Cost: We believe that NUS is not worth our £30,700. Instead, we want Liverpool Guild to put this money where it matters, such as extra equipment for societies or cost-of-living initiatives for students.

Lack of action: Despite outcry from its members, NUS took nearly two years to address the genocide in Gaza. Further, we believe NUS continues to ignore calls by student organisations like FOSIS to investigate allegations of Islamophobia.

Fragmentation: NUS has been unable to convince its members to stay. Cambridge SU and LSE recently voted to leave the NUS UK. Other unions are preparing to hold referendums later this year.

The NUS is a sinking ship; let’s escape while we can! Vote Leave!

Get Referendum Ready: FAQs

A Referendum is a vote open to all students  who are full members of the Guild, for them to express their views on a matter. In a Referendum, students can choose between two options. At least 5% of eligible University of Liverpool students must vote in order for the Referendum result to be valid. The Board of Trustees will be notified of the outcome of the vote.

This proposal comes from a student petition submission to our Change It platform, which proposed that the Guild disaffiliate from NUS UK. You can read the Change It petition in full here

This petition was live for votes from Monday 1st December – Friday 12th December 2025. To proceed to an all-student vote, this petition required a quoracy of 3% of students to sign it. 947 signatures were received, and so a referendum is being held on the matter.

In line with the usual process for a Referendum, the result will be determined using first past the post. This means voters can only pick one option to vote for on the ballot. Each option needs a simple majority to win.

The Referendum is taking place from 9am on Monday 23rd February 2026 – 2pm on Friday 27th February 2026. The results will be announced on Monday 2nd March.

Further Information

Below is some background information on NUS and our membership with them, which the Guild has collated to help inform your decision.

NUS Membership and Affiliation:

  • By joining NUS, a Students’ Union becomes a member of both NUS UK and NUS Charity.
    • NUS UK is centred on delivering national campaigns and representation.
    • NUS Charity focuses on the provision of a strong students’ union for every student, such as union development resources. This membership is not impacted by the referendum vote.

The Guild & NUS:

  • Liverpool Guild of Students has been a member of NUS since it was established in 1922. You can read more on the Guild and NUS on our website: National Union of Students
  • The Guild currently pays an annual membership fee of £30,700 to NUS UK. Fees are based on block grant funding, with the Guild currently paying the maximum capped contribution amount.
  • To disaffiliate from NUS UK, a Union must hold a disaffiliation vote, in which all students at an institution can vote by secret ballot.
    • Written confirmation must then be sent to NUS’ Board before 1 July in the year in which an SU wishes to withdraw from membership. This will then take effect on 31 December of that year.
    • This means that if University of Liverpool students vote to disaffiliate, that the Guild will remain a part of their membership until 31st December 2026.
  • This referendum proposes leaving NUS UK but not NUS Charity.
