Petitions

Guild Petitions can be used as part of a campaign, usually to lobby the University, Government or other organisation. It is a platform that allows you to gather the signatures of thousands of students who may support your campaign and illustrate the general feeling regarding an issue, to apply pressure and influence change.

Petitions can also be used for other purposes, as laid out in our Articles of Association. This includes being able to challenge the outcome of Guild Summit.

To sign a petition below, ensure you are logged in and then select the thumbs up button within the green box that corresponds to the petition you would like to sign

    Disaffiliate from NUS UK

The NUS, which was once a force for good, has now become financially motivated and undemocratic. Students have demanded better for years; it's now clear that NUS can't be fixed: 1. Liverpool Guild pays an eye-watering £30,700 to NUS UK a year in affiliation fees. This money could be better spent on our own societies. 2. NUS's democratic reforms have reduced students' opportunities to democratically influence NUS's work and positions. We no longer have a real voice in what is supposed to be our 'national union'. 3. NUS UK and NUS Charity are two separate organisations. By disaffiliating from NUS UK, we will still be eligible for charity benefits.

10:58am on 1 Dec 25 Liverpool Guild of Students’ Articles outlines that students can start a petition on the Guild website for a number of reasons. This Petition, submitted by Fin Deane and seconded by Daniel Horton, calls for the Guild to hold a referendum on affiliation to the National Union of Students (NUS) UK. In line with our Articles of Association and Bye-laws, if 3% of Guild members sign this petition, a referendum will be held on whether the Guild should remain affiliated to NUS UK. If a vote is held, a referendum would give all members the opportunity to vote and express their opinion on the matter. The petition is open until 2pm on Friday 12th December. The petition proposer has written the above in support of their call for a referendum. By signing this petition, you are agreeing that you wish the Guild to hold an all-member vote on whether the Guild should remain affiliated to NUS UK. 3:31pm on 1 Dec 25 Students have struggled with the cost-of-living crisis, marketisation of universities, and rising rent. But where is the NUS? An organisation which is supposed to be our "national" union? Instead, the NUS has invested its time (in my opinion) in repressing its own members for speaking out on Palestine. This is an organisation which historically led consumer boycotts against the apartheid regime in South Africa. Enough is enough. It's time to reinvest the affiliation fee into our own societies.

4:36pm on 1 Dec 25 The NUS has taken a shamefully absent position through almost two years of genocide in Gaza, even refusing to enact their democratically voted-in pro-Palestine motion, all whilst student activists were being targeted across the country. In their last conference they said that they will not take an antizionist stance. They have also badly failed to challenge institutional islamophobia. We are paying more than £30,000 that comes from our students' pockets to NUS each year. It is better to spend this money locally to benefit our students instead of giving it to what I believe has become an ineffective, undemocratic, and racist organisation.

5:07pm on 1 Dec 25 The NUS has failed the student movement, especially when it comes to Palestine. No money for an organization that said nothing against genocide.

12:35am on 3 Dec 25 Let all stagnant and repugnant old things, that, when faced with the fundamental political, social and miral crisis of our time-the Genocide of Palestinians in Gaza-chooses to say nothing, and in fact engages in monstrous suppression of those who speak out in solidarity with the people of Palestine, be thrown into the dustbin of history.

10:53pm on 3 Dec 25 The NUS has consistently failed to stand up against islamophobia, especially when students speak out for Palestinian lives. If we truly believe all people are equal, then we can’t keep supporting an organisation that stays silent while students are targeted and marginalised for demanding justice. Our money should go to a union that protects every community, not one that ignores them.

11:45am on 4 Dec 25 We need to disaffiliate from the NUS for these 3 reasons: - NUS have not addressed ongoing concerns on Islamophobia - NUS have shown a clear lack of action and leadership on Palestine - NUS have forgotten their need to listen to students thus becoming an anti-democratic org Let's disaffiliate and save some money for our own student union! (We pay £30k guys) Let's disaffiliate and be our own inclusive student union where we protect all students !
    Harisah Malik
1:26pm on 4 Dec 25 The NUS is an institutionally biased, un representative organisation that fails to represent students from all demographics - vote to disaffiliate and ensure the money spent on an organisation that doesn't work for us can be spent on our own societies and students!
    Ibrahim Ali
3:49pm on 4 Dec 25 The NUS censors student activism against humanitarian causes.

12:51pm on 5 Dec 25 I agree to disengage with NUS

1:49pm on 5 Dec 25 Students deserve the opportunity to vote on our NUS Affiliation, to secure a democratic referendum on the Guilds NUS membership please sign this petition !

1:52pm on 5 Dec 25 Referendum! Viva La Democracy!

2:58pm on 7 Dec 25 Although I personally feel that Israel's action in Gaza does amount to genocide and is absolutely wrong, I feel that the NUS is right to remain neutral. It is here to represent all students regardless of their views. By taking sides it would not be able to do this effectively. An open dialogue and ability for discussion is though important and I recognise that many individuals feel very strongly about this issue.
