Should the Guild Boycott Bacardi?

Boycott Barcadi ReferendaElectionsVote

Have your say in what’s sold in your Students’ Union and decide whether the Guild should boycott Bacardi.

From 9am on the 13th November – 2pm 17th November, we will be holding 2 referendums to ask University of Liverpool students whether the Guild should Boycott Bacardi rum, and replace it with an alternative Havana Club.

Last semester a student submitted the idea to our Change It platform, which focused on the relationship between Bacardi and Cuba. It proposes that the Guild no longer stock Bacardi, and instead replace it with an alternative, such as Havana Club. The idea was then discussed at the Guild Summit on 23rd April 2023. At that meeting Summit attendees did not reach consensus on the matter, and so it is now going to a cross-campus ballot. Ideas that divide opinion at Guild Summit are put to a campus wide ballot to enable all students to express their view on the matter.

We will asking you to have your say in the cross-campus ballot. You will be able to select one answer in each of the following votes:

“Should the Guild adopt the proposal to boycott Bacardi Rum and replace it with Havana Club?”

  1. Yes
  1. No

“Should the Guild educate students on the background of both the companies/suppliers?”

  1. Yes
  1. No

Play an active role: Join a Campaign Team

There will be campaign teams for the various options on the ballots.

Any student can join or lead one of these campaign teams. Campaign teams must register before voting opens in order to be able to submit a statement, get campaign materials and receive campaign training.

If you’d like to lead or be part of one of the campaign teams for any of the options on the ballots, please email an expression of interest to democracy@liverpool.ac.uk by 9am on Wednesday 25th October.
