Kathryn's Blog - Women's History Month Reflections

March is the annual celebration of women's history month. This month is to mark the achievements of women past and present and their contributions to society which have been traditionally overlooked. As part of our More Than a Month campaign we aim to celebrate all marginalised groups in society and to bring them together to celebrate the achievements of all women this month.

We had a jammed packed month full of lots of different events.

International Womens Day Fair

To celebrate International Womens Day on the 8th of March we held a fair on Guild Street which included hundreds of free doughnuts and stalls from Guild Advice, Coppa Feel, Saudi society, the Universities student support team. We also had ‘The Cube’ where people wrote down women who inspired them as well as empowering quotes.

Society Events

We also teamed up with the Feminist society to advertise their International Womens Day Ball. We also collaborated with them over a reusable period pad making session with our sustainability team as well as our weekly Big Quiz being International Womens Day themed. All these events went well, and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who attended. Furthermore, we also held a zine making afternoon where you could destress from the week and be crafty to celebrate the month.

Book Giveaway

As is now a tradition for the celebratory months we did our book give away. This giveaway included the following books: Feminism Interrupted - Lola Olufemi, Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys, Tiger Lily - Jodi Lynn Anderson, Quicksand and Passing - Nella Larsen.

Women’s History Month Heros

In collaboration with the libraries, we created a list of inspiring women and our favourite stories and films based on women as well as directed by women. The list included women such as Rosa Luxemburg, Maya Angelou, Beyonce and Mikaela Loach as well a range of different books and films.  All these women come from different backgrounds and different periods in time however what they all have in common is that they have done/are doing inspiring work and their achievements are celebrated globally. You can also go over to Women’s History Month @ Liverpool Guild of Students for more information on inspiring women and resources.

Lastly, I want to celebrate my fellow officers. This year myself, Vasiliki, Ella and Lina are the Guild’s second all women's team ever and the first since 1998. Working with these 3 great women has been an honour and celebrating our achievements and journey into the role as your student officers is something I will always be proud of.
