Get Involved with Guild Schools

Guild SchoolsVolunteering

Are you looking for ways to grow your skills and set you up for a career in teaching or share a topic you're passionate with with students from the local area? Guild schools is back for this year with a whole host of ways you can get invovled.

Here is everything you need to know about the project and how you can get invovled.

What is Guild Schools?

Guild Schools gives you an opportunity to lead a?session on an area you’re passionate about to local primary or secondary school children.

The  project gives University of Liverpool students the chance to deliver workshops in Primary or Secondary schools across Merseyside. It’s a great opportunity for students and pupils to develop their skills and experience something new, plus it’s completely free for both the student volunteers and the schools themselves.

You will work with the Guild Schools Team to plan and deliver workshops suitable for Primary and Secondary School pupils. And you’ll receive all the training that you need prior to delivering to a school, including safeguarding and session planning.

You can get involved in the project regardless of your academic background and, if you complete 7+ hours of volunteering, this activity can be uploaded to your Higher Education Achievement Report when you graduate.

What do the sessions look like?

We have three types of sessions that you can deliver:

Societies in Schools:

Societies in Schools give any Guild society the opportunity to share your passion about your subject or a new skill with schools in the local area.

Get Inspired! Here are some examples from previous years:

  • DNA Workshop to teach the basic techniques involved in DNA extraction and describe the basics of what DNA is and where it is found

  • Recycling Workshop to help children understand the different effects of materials we use and how recycling is important to our environment

  • Teddy Bears Hospital to teach children to learn the different roles played by staff in a hospital, to have an overall understanding of what healthy eating is and to know what to do in an emergency

  • British Sign Language (BSL) to raise awareness of deafness and teach basic British sign language

  • Disability Awareness covering what disability means, how it effects individuals and how we can all make society more equal

Green Schools:

Our Green Schools initative gives volunteers the opportunity to introduce sustainability related topics to primary and secondary age children across Merseyside.

How it works:

  • You will be trained to deliver a one-hour session with another volunteer. It could be teaching pupils how to recycle, how to live sustainably or showing them how to carry out an exciting science experiment!  There are lots of Sustainable Sessions to get involved in, here are some examples from previous years:

  • Introducing  the importance of bees and biodiversity

  • Getting students engaged in growing their own food

  • Educating secondary school pupils on Environmental careers

  • Looking at the impact of plastic on the marine environment

Science in Schools:

Science in Schools is a flexible, fun and interactive session that engages young people in science. It is designed to be delivered by student volunteers in the classroom to 9-11 year olds although it could be adapted to many other environments and ages.

You don’t have to have a science background, just a passion and enthusiasm for delivering interactive sessions to primary school pupils; we’ll provide the rest!
