Student Ideas

Got an idea to make University life better?
We could help make it happen.

Change It is a platform that gives each and every student the opportunity to share ideas which will have a positive impact on your time at University.

Tell us what your suggestion is – no matter how big or small – and we will use our democratic processes to support your suggestion every step of the way. Your idea could be the next catalyst for change on our campus!

Tell us your suggestion

No matter how big or small, we will use our democratic processes to support your suggestion every step of the way.

Your idea could be the next catalyst for change on our campus!

2

Vote, comment & participate!

Once your idea has been approved, it's over to you to spread the word and get campus voting - and talking about your idea! Once your idea has received 20 'upvotes' – which tells us other students like and support it - we will get to work. Students are also able to down vote an idea, however this doesn't impact if your idea progresses through the process, it just gives students a chance to share both sides of the debate. Students who downvote an idea will be invited to share their thoughts and campaign against the idea.

Submissions stay live and open for votes on our website for 2 weeks once they've been approved, so make sure you get people voting on your idea!

Ideas

Students can submit an idea if they want the Guild to have policy on a particular issue, or campaign or work on a particular matter. Ideas can be about a wide range of things; including the Guild, University and the wider community. This can range from simple, operational ideas to larger scale campaigns. Submitting an idea is also the way to get the matter discussed at Guild Summit.

We propose that the University of Liverpool transitions to an entirely plant-based catering system. Considering the significant environmental impact of animal agriculture, we consider it imperative that the University of Liverpool takes action to mitigate the disastrous effects of climate change, animal agriculture is responsible for over 16% of global greenhouse gas emissions, producing the equivalent of almost 10 billion tonnes of CO2 a year, transitioning to a plant-based diet would be expected to half the greenhouse gas emissions of the food industry. The production of animal products is also incredibly inefficient, providing only 17% of the calorie supply but requiring 80% of agricultural land, while a plant-based diet is expected to reduce agricultural the land use by 3/4. The current use of animal products in food is replete with ethical issues, causing the death of over 1 trillion vertebrate animals including over 72 billion land animals, along with the imprisonment and enslavement of billions of others, the excessive use of animal products has also been associated with many health problems among people directly, while indirectly animal agriculture is putting human health at risk with pandemics born of intensive animal farming. A plant-based diet can serve as a more ethical, healthy and sustainable alternative. We aim to emulate the campaigns of Universities throughout the country calling for this transition with 10 Universities in the UK already being successful. Our group comprises of a number of students and staff who share the aspiration of supporting the University of Liverpool in becoming a more sustainable and ethical institution and would be grateful of the opportunity to articulate this agenda more clearly.
