Wilderness is proud to present Intro Weekend!!

This is the first weekend away of our academic year - and this one is going to be bigger and better than ever!!!

If you haven’t already raced over to buy your tickets (hurry because they go quickly) then here’s the lowdown on what exactly Intro Weekend is all about:

When is it happening? ⏳

Intro this year will take place from when we depart Liverpool at 6.30pm on Friday the 13th of November to mid-afternoon when we return on Sunday the 15th of November. ⏰

Where will it be? 🗺

We will be staying at the Thorpe Farm Bunkhouses in the Wilderness of the Hope Valley, Derbyshire.

Address - Thorpe Farm, Hathersage, Hope Valley S32 1EG.

Derbyshire is miles away, how do I get there? 🚌

Don’t worry - there will be a bus to take 50 Wilderpeeps directly from the Liverpool Guild of Students.

So we know when and where it is, what will we be doing? 🧐

At Intro our timetable works something like this:

Friday night

  • Everyone aboard the Wilderbus at 6.30pm sharp, don’t be late!
  • Arrive at Thorpe Farm.
  • Dormitories will be allocated to you dependant on your preference of same sex or mixed.
  • Bring some food to heat up in microwaves or a packed tea for Friday night, or simply grab a meal before you jump on our Wilderbus.
  • Time to socialise with your fellow Wilderness members, break out the Uno, and grab an early night so you’re ready and raring to go for a full day of teaching and simulations the next day!!

Saturday

Teaching sessions 🚑

Early start and breakfast will be served so you’re fuelled for the day

For all those new to wilderness medicine:

  • The morning will be full indoor and outdoor teaching stations covering as much Wilderness Medicine as we possibly can - really getting you experienced with our A-E assessment including:
    • C spine injuries
    • Catastrophic haemorrhage
    • Airway
    • Breathing
    • Circulation
    • Disability
    • Exposure
  • You’ll be split up into groups and will rotate through each of the stations, getting stuck in using equipment, assessing patients and practicing your skills!

For all those with a bit more experience:

  • We will see the return of our advanced circuit!!
  • We’ll rotate between stations teaching you about more complex scenarios involving:
    • Scene control
    • Environmental challenges
    • Challenging management
    • Cases that adapt based on how you respond

So even if you’re a Wilderness regular or a first time Intro Weekender, we’ve got cases and teaching to suit you.

Then after we serve lunch, we’ll reorganise you into your afternoon groups and we’ll have teamwork challenges including:

  • Search and rescue radio communication
  • Mass casualty management + teamwork
  • Escape rooms
  • Patient extraction
  • And many more!!

Mass Casualty!! 🚨

  • As our last experience of the day, you will dive into everyone’s favourite part of Intro Weekend - THE MASS CASUALTY!
  • As night falls, you will be split up into teams and briefed on your situation - be prepared for anything, because outside, any number of patients with any number of Pre Hospital Emergency Scenarios might be waiting for you - and the big twist is … THE COMMITTEE WILL BE YOUR PATIENTS!!!
  • We’ll be assessing you on everything you’ve learned to see what you’ve picked up - but this is all a simulated session for your learning - and don’t worry, we’ll debrief everything the next morning!!

SOCIAL!! 🎉🥳

  • Now it’s time to have, what we like to call in Wilderness, a lot of organised fun!
  • Run by your amazing Social Secs, that will bring you such nights out as BEERIENTEERING, comes our famous Intro Weekend Saturday Night Social, full of games and good vibes. 😎

Sunday

  • Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. But on our last day of intro, we won’t leave you shortchanged!
  • Breakfast is included in the morning to make sure you go back to Liverpool fully recovered from all the excitement of the weekend.
  • All back on the Wilderbus, direct to Liverpool to get you home by lunchtime / early afternoon.

How much will it cost and what do I get for that? 💰

We know the student budget is tight, which is why we’ve kept the cost as low as possible at £66, and for that you get:

  • Transport to and from the venue from the heart of campus (Trains from Lime Street to Hathersage, Hope Valley range from £25 to £40 return).
  • Accommodation for 2 nights.
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Saturday.
  • Breakfast on Sunday.
  • A full day of guided teaching and simulation experience.
  • A mass casualty sim which you won’t experience in any other society.
  • An organised social for everyone (alcohol and no alcohol friendly).

We hope you enjoy your Intro Weekend as much as we enjoy running it - whether it’s your first time or you’ve been before!
