Manifesto Question Responses
Why are you running to be an Officer?
I'm running because I've experienced first hand the stress of navigating housing problems without support and watching finances limit the university experience. Right now, the university offers virtually no support for housing - this must be changed. I want to build a lasting network that will empower all students, not just those here today but for years to come. On top of that, cost of living is a huge issue and I want to do all I can to reduce its impact on students.
What qualities would you bring to the role?
I genuinely want to create a long-term impact that outlasts a single term as an officer. I believe strongly in student empowerment - students shouldn't feel powerless navigating housing or finances. I will work closely with current officers, societies, and most importantly, listen to and act on students' real concerns. I'm focused on building solutions that create noticeable improvements in students' lives, and believe that with realistic goals, we can make this happen.
What would be your top 4 priorities, if you were elected?
(1) Launching HOME - Housing Opportunities Made Easy
Housing is one of the biggest stresses students face, yet we're left to navigate it alone. Universities like Manchester, Durham, and Newcastle to name a few already have housing support systems - I believe we can have the same. HOME can create this through three clear pillars:
- HOME Platform: A system connecting students with available rooms and flatmates (a Rightmove for students).
- HomeAdvisor Reviews: Student reviews on housing (like TripAdvisor) so you know what you're getting before signing.
- Dedicated Housing Support Hub: Visible, accessible support with know-your-rights workshops and direct help for tenancy issues.
(2) Support the University's Net Zero Commitments
The university has ambitious climate goals and I'll work to ensure we meet our net zero targets through increased recycling facilities, zero-waste schemes, and lobbying through meetings with the University boards and councils.
(3) Expand 24-Hour Services
I'll lobby for 24-hour facilities across the University such as the gym and further study areas. Students have different schedules, responsibilities and needs and our facilities should reflect and support that.
(4) Cost of Living Support
Pushing for student bus passes, cheaper food and drink on campus, and increased direct financial support. The University experience should be for all students, regardless of personal financial circumstance.
