At ReachOut, we believe that with the right support every young person can reach their full potential. ReachOut is a mentoring charity working with children in disadvantaged communities to raise aspirations and help them grow in character and improve academic skills. We improve self-confidence and develop numeracy, literacy, communication and memory skills whilst reinforcing our core values of fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power. We do this through one-to-one mentoring with positive role models and team activities to promote leadership, trust and responsibility.
Can you spare 1-2 hours a week in 2021-22 to help a young person grow in character and attainment?
ReachOut Club – One-to-one and group mentoring for young people in primary school. Projects run on weekday afternoons, 3.30-5.00pm between October 2021 - April 2022.
Currently training for these roles is all online but if lockdown restrictions are lifted by September, we will look into returning to face-to-face mentoring.
As a Mentor you'll work with the same young person each week. Sessions of between 10-16 young people and 10-16 mentors take place weekly and are led by a Project Leader. You will be matched one-to-one with a mentee who you will support for the academic year. In your pairings and in group sessions, you will take part in character building activities and modules that allow the young people to gain knowledge and skills of the real world.
Due to the one-to-one elements of the work, you develop an amazing relationship with your mentee over the course of the year being able to see first-hand them grow and develop.
ReachOut is also a hugely sociable organisation. We run socials throughout the year to thank our mentors for their commitment and allow them to meet other mentors from projects all over Greater Manchester. We work with around 200 mentors in the region this is a brilliant networking and social opportunity!
You don't require any experience to become a ReachOut mentor as we provide all the training you will need. We run two short sessions before you begin on a project. The first is an interactive session which allows you to meet fellow mentors and learn some practical tips for working with your mentee. The second is a webinar style session which details logistical information and safeguarding processes. There are also some online modules that will cement your knowledge!
Each session is led by an experienced Project Leader who is always on hand to offer support and answer your queries. Your Project Leader is also there to support you. Many of our Project Leaders began as mentors and we are really keen for as many mentors as possible to develop into this role in the future. If you are keen to take on more of a leadership role, your Project Leader can help you develop those skills. You will meet many other members of the ReachOut team throughout your time mentoring who are there to support you in any way they can. Your Volunteer Officer, Becky, will always be available and happy to help in any way she can to ensure that you can provide the best support for your mentee and get the most from your volunteering experience.
What we expect of you
All we ask is that you can spare 1-2 hours a week and are committed, enthusiastic and positive. Before starting we ask all our volunteers to complete a DBS check (which we organise), provide references and to attend both training sessions.
