Merseyside National Trust Environmental Volunteers (MNTEV)

Details Hide[-]

To volunteer with us you do not have to be a member of the NT; nor do you have to become a member of the MNTEV immediately.  The initial days working with us will give you the opportunity to find out about the group.  There is a modest annual membership fee which primarily pays for replacing and maintaining hand tools, and various publicity.

‘A couple of ‘Safeguarding’ requirements’

1.  ‘People under the age of 18 years of age can volunteer with the MNTEV but must always be accompanied by a parent/guardian during work days.’

2.  ‘Vulnerable adults volunteering with the group must always be accompanied by a responsible adult during work days.’

Members of the MNTEV are not paid but the NT will ensure you don’t lose out financially by volunteering, they will cover agreed out-of-pocket expenses i.e., cost of travel between your home and where you volunteer.

A NT Ranger will explain:
  • how to use tools safely;
  • how to complete the job you have been asked to carry out;
  • why the task is important.
Training is not essential, you will soon pick up the various skills required to do the work.  Support is always available.

The NT has insurance cover for legal liability claims, either by or against volunteers working for the Trust, resulting from damage to property or personal injury.

On average, on alternate Sundays throughout the year, the MNTEV volunteer at several other NT outdoor sites, In addition to the grounds of Speke Hall, i.e.
  • Merseyside - Freshfields / Formby, Wirral (Burton Woods, Caldy Hill, Thurstaston Common;
  • Cheshire - Bickerton, Helsby;
  • Greater Manchester: - Quarry Bank Mill;
  • North Wales - Chirk Castle, Erddig.
  • The work programme also includes 1-2 residential working weekends per annum: Cumbria / Derbyshire / North Wales / Yorkshire.

Sunday workdays commence at 10:00am and conclude at approximately 3:30pm.  Volunteers can choose their start and finish times and work at a pace which is comfortable for them.  There is no minimum number of hours to be worked per day or per annum.  If, for whatever reason, you prefer to volunteer at one NT location, or, at certain times of the year, both are possible.

The number of volunteers participating in a work day ranges from 6-15, usually working as a team(s).  Often there is the opportunity to work on 1-3 jobs, providing variety for those wanting a change.  Tasks can have several elements and people usually swap around to give everyone the opportunity to do something different.

Tasks include:
  • hedge and tree planting;
  • maintaining, improving and creating habitats;
  • scrub clearance or thinning out;
  • pruning;
  • fence maintenance and construction;
  • footpath maintenance and construction;
  • other construction, e.g. building and repairing foot bridges;
  • litter picking and beach clean-ups;
  • coastal conservation.
  •
  • For workdays you will require:
  •
  • clothing suitable for gardening which will keep you warm;
  • safety boots / shoes / wellingtons;
  • waterproofs;
  • gloves;
  • packed lunch and a drink.
