Oba Akinwale, Vice President

Oba Akinwale, Deputy President

Background: I class my nationality as Nigerian, was born in Surrey, raised in Saudi Arabia and now call Birmingham home. Completed a degree in Sociology & Criminology and also created my own company called The Victoria Events co.

My passion: Playing and watching all manner of different sports. Professionally, I love conceiving and conceptualising a range of different events.

Best quote I’ve heard: “If it be now, ‘tis not to come. If it be to come, it will be now. If it be not now, yet it will come – the readiness is all” (William Shakespeare, Hamlet)

Favourite thing about the Guild: Sue McGuirk (one of the Guild’s brilliant cleaning staff – you’ll probably see her in the Courtyard)

My priorities: Widening participation with and within the Guild. Establishing a better platform for RAG & showing more support for sport teams.

My plans and progress so far:

Invited an external promoter and saw a successful weekly student night in the Guild.

A campaign done in partnership with the Athletic Union centred around tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport.

Redesigning how sports results are shown and adding them to the Guild website.

A campaign in partnership with the Athletic Union raising awareness around the importance of being open about one’s mental health.

Constantly fighting for no teaching activity to be scheduled on Wednesday afternoons. I sit on the Timetabling Group and can access and influence from there.

Lobbying for a preferential rate for both commuting students and weekend parking.

A scheme where societies and sports clubs get a portion of their spend back on purchases at events.

I am in the process of making free condoms available in the Guild. This will also include a small campaign raising awareness of this and other sexual health advice.’

EYS is a society accreditation scheme whereby societies hit certain criteria under different headings (e.g inclusion, sustainability) and are awarded a stripe in recognition.

Ensuring Guild involvement in raising awareness and the profile of Varsity (29th March).
